CNMI schools to open on time despite electricity problems

10:22 am on 1 September 2008

Authorities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas have confirmed that the first day of school for the Public School System will remain Sept. 8th.

Gov. Benigno Fitial had earlier asked the PSS Board of Governors to consider delaying the start of classes for two two weeks or until reliable power became available on Saipan.

His request came after weeks of power outages caused by faulty or worn out generators.

Schools must be closed and children sent home if power is cut for more than two hours.

The administration has ordered new generators which are expected to be operational not later than September 17th.
