11:30 am on 5 September 2008

The American House of Representatives has introduced a bill to ban smoking in certain public and private places.

The Bill the American Samoa Smoke Free Environment Act bans smoking on buses, taxis, public areas of retail stores and banks.

However, it does allow the owners of public places such as restaurants, sports arena and theatre to designate a smoking area in the premises.

The bill also provides penalties, ranging from 50-American dollars to 200 dollars against those who violate the Act.

The Department of Health has been charged with implementing the Act.
