Northern Marianas politician calls for Washington's help to overcome power shortages

3:47 pm on 12 September 2008

The Northern Marianas Resident Representative to Washington, Pete Tenorio, in what he calls an act of desperation, has written to President George Bush asking for federal intervention in the ongoing power crisis.

Mr Tenorio says he had to make the request because the administration of Benigno Fitial refuses to do so.

The Governor's press secretary, Charles Reyes, says the administration is working with the U.S. Department of the Interior to find solutions to the power problem.

Meanwhile there are expectations that the first of a series of new power generators should be turned on today.
