70 students escape bus fire in Fiji

2:09 pm on 17 September 2008

More than 70 secondary school students in Fiji escaped serious injury yesterday when their bus caught fire near Sigatoka.

It comes just three weeks after a bus fire in the same area claimed eleven lives and led to calls for higher levels of safety to be provided by the bus companies.

Fiji Times Online reports that the students were travelling towards Sigatoka Town when the bus burst into flames.

They were forced to jump out the windows as the bus was engulfed in thick black smoke and flames.

Most were uninjured but a handful of students needed treatment at Sigatoka Hospital for minor injuries.
