Hopes website will revolutionise disaster risk management in the Pacific

It is hoped that disaster management in the Pacific region will be boosted by a newly launched website.

The Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission, or SOPAC, says Pacific Disaster Net is the largest, most comprehensive information resource for disaster risk management for Pacific Island countries.

A SOPAC spokesperson, Noud Leenders, says the website shows how to respond to disasters.

It covers preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation and the prevention of disasters and hazards.

"What you would go on it for is basically all sorts of information and research that has been done in the region and for the region. You would look for, for instance, evacuation maps for villages, policy plans in governments, current disaster risk management arrangements."

Noud Leenders says the tool will also help government agencies to improve their responses to disasters.
