American Samoa fibre optic project on schedule

10:22 am on 23 September 2008

American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says the undersea fibre optic cable project is moving forward as planned.

He says a container with machines and equipment to be used for setting up the site in Ili'ili village to land the cable arrived last week.

Togiola said the project has already applied for all the necessary permits and an environmental impact review has been completed.

The cable is currently located about 100 miles off American Samoa at a depth of about 15,000 feet,

A submarine vessel will detect the cable and then recover and relay it to American Samoa.

Togiola says the vessel is scheduled to arrive in early November.
