Latest no confidence motion sparks call for law changes to bring stability in Vanuatu

Vanuatu's speaker of parliament says the country needs laws to foster political stability.

This comes after a motion of no confidence was lodged only days after the new government was elected.

George Wells says he expects the motion of no confidence will be withdrawn today.

Mr Wells says Vanuatu should follow in the footsteps of other countries, such as Papua New Guinea, that have passed legislation that make motions of no confidences less likely.

"That's up to the government to decide upon preventing some of those practices that may cause disturbance to the government and also to the country. It's a priority that the government needs to look at, to sort out some ways that we can have, at least once a government is elected maybe to have some threshhold of 12 months of stability before allowing a motion of no confidence."
