American Samoa Governor calls for support to combat soaring population

7:36 pm on 25 September 2008

The American Samoa Governor is asking for input and support from the community to deal with the rapid growth in the territory's population.

Togiola Tulafono has made the comment during a territorial Population Summit.

The aim of the summit is to come up with policies to arrest the growth in population and promote awareness of the problem.

Togiolo says if left unchecked the issue would affect everyone.

"Population pressure is a threat on all our resources. This is a challenge that we are facing and there's not a man, woman or child in American Samoa that will escape its impact of population growth if we don't manage this problem properly and in a community collaboration."

Togiola Tulafono says his coral reef advisory group has also identified population growth as the number one problem affecting coastal resources.
