The New Zealand Institute of Atmospheric Research and meteorological services in the Pacific are forecasting the region can expect an average level cyclone activity over the coming season.

NIWA says that from November 2008 to May 2009, there is likely to be a normal risk of occurrence over much of the South Pacific, though the risk will be lower in parts of French Polynesia.

NIWA says it it likely the first cyclone will occur before the end of December, which is normal.

Between eight to ten tropical cyclones can be expected in the season.
