Police in Vanuatu have reportedly shot a prison escapee while recapturing him.

The man was understood to be a high risk prisoner.

Police have so far recaptured four out of nine inmates who broke out of the high security section of Port Vila Correctional Service Centre, 11 days ago.

Our correspondent in Vanuatu, Len Garae says sources from Port Vila hospital say of the four recaptured, one of them was taken to hospital by police, and he is claiming he was shot in the foot.

"One of the inmates who escaped was shot and he's now in hospital. But the police have said that he was not shot, they denied he was shot. They said he fell off a cliff, but the inmate himself confirmed that he was shot in the foot."

Len Garae says it is not known whether or not the other recaptured fugitives were hurt.

A Commission of Inquiry is investigating how the nine men escaped.
