The French High Commission in New Caledonia has announced that an experimental ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol will be imposed again this weekend.

The measure was brought in last weekend as a one off trial, with Noumea retailers not able to sell alcohol from Friday evening until Sunday at midnight.

Oceania Flash reports that the trial ban had a very real impact and this weekend it will be extended to include three suburban towns, Dumbea, Mont-Dore and Paita.

The measure aims to reduce the number of crimes committed as a result of open-air drinking sessions by youths.
