Samoan judge bans reporting of dispute tribunal case

2:42 pm on 7 October 2008

Reporters in Samoa are allowed to listen to the proceedings of the first hearing of Samoa's Sports Dispute Tribunal but they are banned from reporting them.

The ban relating to the hearing into the financial debts of the Samoa Football Soccer Federation was announced by the senior Supreme Court Judge presiding over the matter, Lesatele Rapi Va'ai.

A local freelance journalist is seeking legal advice over the possibility of filing an injunction in the Supreme Court to fight the media ban.

Meanwhile, several former executive members of Samoa's soccer federation and registered club members are the complainants in the hearing against the current President, Tole'afoa Tautulu Roebeck, and SFSF Director, Tilomai Solia.

The two parties are represented by lawyers and their witnesses will be called to give evidence this afternoon.
