Fiji to sign Forum's air sevices agreement

Fiji is hoping there will be increased flights for the national carrier Air Pacific after Cabinet agreed to sign the Forum's Pacific Islands Air Services Agreement

The website Fiji Live reports that once Fiji signs the agreement the largest airline in the region, Air Pacific, will be able to make use of the opportunities and maximise its benefits - especially when capacities and frequencies of flights will not be restricted.

Fiji's interim prime minister and acting civil aviation minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says the agreement places the control of change in the hands of Forum Island countries rather than having change forced upon airlines at a pace determined by external factors.

He said the air sevices agreement aims to establish a framework for the gradual integration of aviation services for the members of the Pacific Islands Forum in a way that is fully supportive of sustainable development for the Forum Island Countries
