Fiji's SDL plans to appeal coup verdict

2:34 pm on 16 October 2008

Fiji's SDL party plans to appeal a court ruling legalising the 2006 coup.

The ruling dismissed the ousted prime minister and SDL leader Laisenia Qarase's challenge of the president's powers, finding the coup valid and granting immunity to the military leaders.

The Fijilive website quotes Mr Qarase as saying the party issued instructions to its lawyers to prepare a case for appeal.

He says they will go the Appeals Court and then to the Supreme Court, and if they're still unhappy they may consider going to the International Court of Justice.
