French Polynesian defector survives eligibility challenge

The French authorities have rejected a French Polynesian opposition bid to annul the election of an assembly member, Justine Teura, for allegedly making an incomplete return.

French Polynesian television reports that the office overseeing campaigning rejected the complaint which allows the ruling coalition to keep its slim majority in the assembly.

Mrs Teura changed political allegiance in April, just a few weeks after being elected for a five-year term as a member of the Union For Democracy.

She defected with a party colleague to bring down the government - a move which prompted the Union For Democracy to lodge a complaint.

If she had been found in breach of the rules she would have lost her seat.
