China has become the first country to formally establish diplomatic ties with Niue, with Ambassador Zhang Limin presenting his credentials to Premier Toke Talagi in a ceremony in Alofi at the weekend.

Wellington-based Mr Zhang is also the Ambassador to New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

Mr Talagi says Niue attaches importance to developing ties with China and thanked it for the assistance in expanding Niue's airport and a housing project.

Mr Zhang says there has been sound development in links between the two countries since ties were first established late last year.
