Vanuatu media body calls for fairness

3:18 pm on 21 October 2008

Vanuatu's media association has called on the country's public broadcaster to make sure it treats a journalist fairly and without political interference.

The journalist, Antoine Malsungae, who is also the President of the Media Association of Vanuatu, has been suspended by the VBTC over an allegation of bias in his reporting of the September election results and formation of a new government

The vice-president of the association, Evelyne Toa, says they are concerned at why the complaint was made.

"If they've suspended, disciplined, Antoine just because of the political pressure, that's our concern. That was the concern of media association blong Vanuatu. Because we have a code of ethics to guide us, and the VBTC itself has an editorial guideline."

Evelyne Toa says she understands a report was given to the VBTC board last week, and is awaiting a decision.
