The 22nd Miss South Pacific Pageant has been won by Miss Niue, Vanessa Marsh.

The 23 year-old was crowned at the weekend event in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Miss Marsh who works as a fisheries officer for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, walked away with a cash award of 5,000 US dollars and other gifts from local sponsors.

Our correspondent in American Samoa, Monica Miller says each contestant was talented and smart but she says Vanessa Marsh's personality really stood out.

"She has creativity, she has spunk. She's got personality. And from the start she portrayed that. This young woman knows her mind and she knows what's right and what's not right. And then also for her talent, everything she performed in that night, she was really good. She would come on stage and she would or she would just strike a pose."

Monica Miller says Miss Marsh is now looking forward to being an ambassador for Niue and the South Pacific region.

Next year's pageant will be hosted by Fiji.
