Fiji People's Party predicts Interim Regime to remain in power for 5 years

The general secretary of the Fiji People's Party, Charan Jeath Singh, says he believes the interim government will be in power for at least five years.

Mr Singh, who was among those attending Monday's political leaders dialogue meeting in Suva, says he can't imagine elections happening before 2011.

He says the interim government has already had 2 years, and and by the time the electoral reform process finishes, it will be 5.

"We will basically end up using all of 2009 into agreeing and formulating the electoral process. So these are the issues now I think will be very much debated. My feeling is that the way things are, we'll be lucky to have an election in 2010, and it could be 2011."

Charan Jeath Singh says he thinks 5 weeks was too long for parties to be given to submit ideas on the agenda of the political forum, but accepts the interim government had its reasons.
