French Polynesia's veteran leader, Gaston Flosse, has accused the French state of staging a plot against him over the issue of repaying some funds disbursed between 1996 and 2004.

Mr Flosse made the accusation on the eve of today's planned assembly vote on whether he and his supporters have reimburse three million US dollars in public funds which the French accounts office says was misspent under a system designed to deceive.

Mr Flosse says the French action against him is devised to protect to French bureaucrats.

At a news conference, he presented documents which showed that complaints of alleged misuse of public money were lodged with the French authorities in 2000.

He says in those cases the French government ignored the matter.

The scheduled assembly vote also comes after a demonstration against corruption.

The small group called on the public not to accept attempts by the politicians to now declare financial abuse as being expenditure for the public good.
