Fiji to get a Greens' party

7:30 pm on 3 November 2008

A Fiji politician, who was dumped from the interim Government Cabinet early this year, is forming a new political party, the Green Party.

Bernadette Rounds Ganilau says she has the necessary 200 members to register the party and plans to do so soon.

Ms Ganilau says the party will build upon the work of other Green parties across the world, with modifications to suit Fiji's needs.

"We have guiding principles, but basically it's ecological wisdom, social justice and non-violence, participatory democracy and sustainability. And these are all very comfortable with what a lot of us feel traditionally and culturally and what we feel is the agenda to bring forward."

Bernadette Rounds Ganilau says she hopes the Green Party will be registered in time to take part in the interim Government's planned Presidential forum.
