Striking public sector unions march in New Caledonia

2:35 pm on 4 November 2008

A number of striking public sector unions in New Caledonia have held a march to the territory's Congress to press their demands, which vary from union to union.

The strikers gathered to meet representatives of the territory's Congress but the talks were inconclusive.

One of the union leaders says the meeting with the politicians didn't amount to what could be called negotiations as the employees were just told what their pay and entitlements are.

There are plans for a new round of talks tomorrow.
