Power savings are possible, says Fiji Chamber of Commerce

Fiji's Chamber of Commerce vice president, Humphrey Chang, says some businesses could do more to conserve electricity.

The Fiji Electricity Authority is proposing that 40 businesses be approached in the next three weeks to generate their own electricity because of a water shortage at the Monasavu Dam.

Mr Chang says it's likely to mean increased costs for a number of businesses, which have to ensure their electricity supply runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Mr Chang says some businesses waste power.

"In the middle of the night, for example, in the marketplace here the whole building is padlocked so that nobody gets in and yet the lights are on. You wonder for what purpose, you know?"

Humphrey Chang says that the FEA is doing its best in the current situation and all consumers can help by doing their part to save power.
