American Samoan policeman cops jail sentence for theft

2:38 pm on 4 November 2008

A former police officer in American Samoa has been sentenced to one year in jail for stealing a television set when he was investigating a break-in at

an elementary school.

The veteran policer officer, Ikenasio Maiava, has also ordered to pay a 1,000 US dollar fine.

The Chief Justice Michael Kruse says Maiava has violated the public trust when he removed the television set from the school while investigating an incident.

He says the deterrence is necessary because Maiava was sworn to protect the public and public property, and he abused that trust and enriched himself on that trust.
