Solomon Islands women remain opposed to police re-armament

A women's information and media organization in Solomon Islands says females across the country are voicing their continued opposition to police ever rearming themselves.

Police were disarmed soon after the arrival of RAMSI in 2003, but the speaker of parliment said last week that it's time to trust the police again and give them the equipment they need to do their jobs.

But the director of Vois Blong Mere Solomon, Josephine Teakeni says since then a number of women's groups have been actively discussing their opposition to the move through the media, especially those living in Guadalcanal.

"The women from northwest Guadalcanal have expressed themselves through the mainstream media to say that they are not in support of the police force in Solomon Islands rearming again for fear of the experience that they have been through when guns were used against them."

Josephine Teakeni says it's the second time the issue of police re-arming has come about.
