Fiji's National Farmers Union calls on Sugar Corporation to suspend operations

Fiji's National Farmers Union has called on the Fiji Sugar Corporation to suspend operations at the Labasa sugar mill and compensate farmers for losses.

The Fiji Times reports the call comes due to ongoing intermittent stoppages at the mill.

NFU secretary, Surendra Lal, said it was pointless for the mill to continue crushing beyond December because of the rainy season.

Mr Lal said just three weeks ago mill management had promised to crush 30-40,000 tonnes a week.
