Samoa's government is awaiting an offical response to a letter sent to U.S. officials over the detention of Hans Joachim Keil in the state of Missouri.
The associate minister is being held under strict bail conditions as a result of two immigration charges against him relating to his holding of a US citizenship.
He has been charged with one count of falsely and wilfully representing himself to be a US citizen, and one count of attempting to use a US passport.
Our correspondent in Apia Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says according to local media, the Prime Minister has officially written to U.S. authorities.
"There's a story about the Samoa's Prime Minister's interview and he is saying they are now awaiting some of the negotiations directly to the U.S. government officials to the U.S. court asking for the release of Hans-Joachim Keil to travel to Samoa, under conditions he will return to the U.S. to answer the charges."
