5:03 pm on 11 November 2008

A project to build a resort on the Fiji island of Nukulau has been put on hold.

The Fijilive website says the interim regime has decided to leave the island as it is.

Nukulau was until recently a prison for the perpetrators of the 2000 coup but the people of Rewa proposed to build accommodation for 200 guests, staff quarters and an area for visitors and locals wishing to go there for day trips.

.

The Rewa Provincial Council deputy chairman Pita Tagicakiverata says all the requirements of the Ministry of Lands, including the submission of a master plan and a business plan, were met.

However, Mr Tagicakiverata says the people of Rewa are not disheartened by the interim prime minister's response and will keep trying.
