Niue businesses seek power price discounts

4:11 pm on 18 November 2008

The Niue Chamber of Commerce is asking that special rates be offered for commercial power users as prices have gone up.

Prices have risen by 35 percent and business operators are already facing huge increases in shipping freight rates.

The president of the Chamber of Commerce in Niue, Sonya Talagi, says the chamber has worked with the Niue Power Corporation to come up with commercial rates for business users.

"Because obviously business users have a higher usage rate then individual private consumers. So we have submitted a proposal on behalf of the private sector. And we are awaiting a response from the government of Niue."

Sonya Talagi says businesses are willing to work with the government to try and negotiate a deal that can benefit all.
