Public sector strike affects New Caledonia's administration

4:20 pm on 19 November 2008

A public sector strike for better pay in New Caledonia has continued to affect part of the administration despite an earlier claim by the president that differences had been overcome.

Customs have been working slowly as pressure grows to clear imports ahead of the holiday season.

The service is being hampered by problems with the maintenance of the computer systems.

This is said to delay the payment of salaries and pensions later this month and has set a stop to the issuing of drivers licences and car registrations.

The strike has coincided with protests by employees of the French public service whose retirement benefits are to be cut.
