American Samoa wants cannery job information

9:11 am on 26 November 2008

The American Samoa Government has asked Star Kist Samoa to notify it before it cuts any more jobs at the local plant.

This comes after an announcement last week that 20 salaried positions would be cut and most benefits for waged employees would be discontinued.

The Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says he is trying to arrange a meeting with the owner of Dong Won Corporation which now owns the cannery to discuss its plans.

He says if a meeting is set up, he would invite Fono leaders and the territory's member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin.

The governor says the cannery did inform the government about the job cuts and termination of benefits.

He says he has been assured that apart from the salaried employees, there will be no reductions in the hourly workforce.
