French minister urges end to Tahiti public service strike

12:21 pm on 25 November 2008

The French junior minister in charge of overseas territories, Yves Jego, has called for an end to the public sector strike in French Polynesia.

The unions have been on strike for nearly two weeks in a bid to retain the retirement provisions which the French government plans to downgrade.

As the French legislature has approved the cuts and the union keep up their strike action, Mr Jego says there is also a time to end the strike.

His call comes as the territory's hospitals are set see a strike later this week.

In further action this week, public broadcasting in Tahiti is expected to be affected by a French strike against government plans to stop advertising on public service television.
