9:27 pm on 25 November 2008

The coalition government of Vanuatu Prime Minister Edward Natapei has defeated a parliamentary motion of no-confidence against him.

Mr Natapei's supporters defeated the motion by 26 votes to 24.

The Maewo MP, Philip Boedoro, who signed the notice for the motion last week, withdrew his support for it and voted with the government.

He was one of three members of Mr Natapei's Vanua'aku Pati who were suspended from the party shortly before the vote for signing the motion.

The other two, Harry Iauko and Willie Rueben Abel, voted against Mr Natapei along with another government coalition member, Don Ken, an independent MP from Malekula.

One MP, Dominique Moran from the opposition, abstained from voting.
