The Fiji Supervisor of Elections Felicity Heffernan is pleased with the 2.1 million US dollar budget allocation for its operations next year that has provided the office with a permanent staff structure.

Ms Heffernan told the Fiji Times the Elections Office has not had a permanent staff structure since 1972.

She says the permanent structure makes it possible to do election preparation, although that is subject to the political dialogue considering the electoral system.

Ms Heffernan is expected to meet with the Ministry of Finance to find out what part of her budget submission has been funded in the 2009 allocation.

She added there are options available to the elections office to draw up a Cabinet paper or to ask for donor funding to perform project work in 2009.

Ms Heffernan says every day is one day closer to the election in Fiji, and is is unfortunate the tone of the media in Fiji is focused on negativity.
