Calls for a review of sentencing for sex offenders in Samoa

A Supreme Court judge in Samoa has called on Parliament to consider reviewing the maximum penalty of seven years in jail for the charge of indecent assault against young children under the age of 12.

The call came during the sentencing of a 31 year old man convicted of indecently assaulting an eight year old girl.

During his ruling, Judge Vui Clarence Nelson, said that given the current social climate, it should be asked as to whether the maximum penalty set forty five years ago should be revisited by Parliament.

The judge says the country's newly established Law Reform Commission may see fit to undertake a review of all penalties for sexual offending involving young children given Samoa's obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
