The first Marshall Islands soldier to die in Iraq was killed in a suicide bombing attack late last week.
The U.S. Defense Department says the truck Solomon Sam, 31, was driving was hit in a suicide bomb attack by what the Army describes as a vehicle born improvised explosive device.
Although at least 24 soldiers from U.S.-affiliated islands in the Pacific have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003, Sam is the first from the Marshall Islands.
In addition to Sam, an American soldier in the same vehicle was killed, and several others were injured by the big blast.
The attack was reported to have taken place in Mozul.
