French Polynesian leader suggests he could resign amid deadlock

French Polynesia's president, Gaston Tong Sang, has not ruled out resigning in the face of a political deadlock that threatens the adoption of the 2009 budget.

While professing his determination to stay in power, Mr Tong Sang says he is ready to whatever it takes to end the deadlock which followed this week's resignation of an assembly member of his ruling To Tatou Aia coalition.

He has also restated his stance that he is open to a grand coalition government, adding that the situation demands that ideological differences be put aside.

The opposition has already rejected the proposal and says he must resign.

Mr Tong Sang came to power in April after two politicians of the rival camp switched to his side to give him a one-member majority needed to pass a no-confidence motion.

The vote ousted the government of Gaston Flosse one month into its five-year term.
