Rubbish sculpture in New Caledonia kicks of campaign

2:35 pm on 17 December 2008

A huge sculpture has been set up in New Caledonia as part of a campaign to promote the treatment of garbage in a bid to eliminate hazardous waste in the environment.

The sculpture, shaped as a 15-meter long scorpion, has been erected on a Noumea parking lot and is made out of 27 wrecked cars, eight tonnes of tyres and among others, 800 kilogrammes of old small batteries.

The sculpture will be dismantled next week as 120 collection points for hazardous waste will be set up across the southern province.
