Pacific image of leadership tarnished by Fiji, says NGO

The Pacific Freedom Forum, an online network of Pacific journalists aimed at promoting a free and independent media, says the image of leadership in the Pacific is being seriously damaged by Fiji's military regime.

Chair Susuve Laumaea says the interim Government looks ridiculous, when, after committing to media freedom, it blatantly sets out to silence it.

He was speaking after Fiji had detained and then expelled New Zealand TV journalist, Barbara Dreaver earlier this week.

Mr Laumaea says this is a shameful example of insecurity given that Fiji houses the Pacific Islands Forum and other agencies promoting good governance and human rights.
