New Zealanders' Ryan Nelsen and Shane Smeltz and Tahitian Marama Vahirua are retrospective winners of the Oceania Football Confederation's Player of the Year Awards.

There's been no award since since 2004 when the Everton and Australia international player Tim Cahill won.

The 2005 winner, Vahirua , played in France while the following year's, Nelsen, captains Blackburn Rovers in the English premier league

Last year's award has gone to the A-League's leading goal scorer, the Wellington Phoenix and New Zealand international striker Shane Smeltz.

The General Secretary of the Oceania Football Confederation, Tai Nicholas, says it's been decided to resurrect the award in the interests of continuity and there'll also be a women's award.

Voting for this year's awards will start now with an announcement in about six months.
