Cook Islands Foreign Minister says Marurai and Maoate should step down

11:41 am on 30 December 2008

The Cook Islands Foreign Minister, Wilkie Rasmussen, says the Prime Minister, Jim Marurai and Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Terepai Maoate, should step down, because the Government is not achieving its objectives.

He has told the Cook Islands News there is a need for a complete overhaul of government to determine whether it is addressing the relevant concerns of the nation.

Mr Rasmussen says the Government is under performing because of differences in leadership style and because of the understanding of government and the way it should operate.

He says he heads a faction of 8 MPs from the Democratic Party who are dissatisfied with the direction government is taking.

Mr Rasmussen told the paper that the government has reached a point of no return and that there's now no choice but to seriously consider the continuation of its present leadership.
