Eight vehicles torched in New Caledonia

12:42 pm on 5 January 2009

New Caledonia's daily newspaper says eight pick-up trucks were destroyed in an arson attack over the New Year's Day holiday in Noumea.

The paper says the perpetrators entered the premises of a geology company, smashed the windows of the vehicles, poured petrol into them before setting them alight.

The damage is believed to be about a quarter of a million US dollars.

There have been no arrests over the incident.

In France, more than 1,100 cars were burnt over the holidays in what appears to have become a yearly event.
