Americans to explore Solomons for possible cannery

Reports from Solomon Islands say three representative from an American consultancy firm will visit Malaita this month to look for a possible site to build a cannery.

Its local counterpart, John Safanamae, has told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation that the group consists of potential investors in the fisheries sector.

He says the group intends to visit Bina harbour and Faumamanu to study their location and the possibility to invest in a fish cannery.

Mr Safanamae says the group will hold a briefing with the Malaita provincial premier.

He says many unemployed youths in the province could be engaged in a cannery.

The plans come as the country's main fihs processing plant, Soltai, continues to suffer from financial problems.
