120 French Polynesian teachers resign to avoid pension cuts

Reports from French Polynesia say 120 teachers resigned before the end of December to be spared pension cuts that apply for those retiring from this year.

The Nouvelles de Tahiti newspaper quotes the teachers' union head as saying the changes enacted in the public service's pension plans marked a 30-year step backward.

The French government changed the retirement provisions dating back more than 50 years that will now see a cut to the public sector pension top-ups for those living in France's overseas territories.

The reform was briefly stalled when it was found that it contravened constitutional provisions but before the end of last month a revised plan was adopted.

Last November, a large number of French Polynesia's public sector employees went on strike for more than two weeks in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the reform.
