French Polynesian minister gets suspended jail sentence

French Polynesia's minister of youth and sport, Clarenntz Vernaudon, has been given a suspended 10-month jail sentence for running three companies after another court banned him from doing so because of a bankruptcy declaration.

The Papeete court has also fined him more than 5,000 US dollars.

He was supposed to stay away from running a business for ten years following a 1999 ruling.

The latest conviction has no direct impact on his political career as he is not forced to resign his portfolio.
