Fiji tourism seeks to revitalise industry after floods

1:22 pm on 19 January 2009

Tourism Fiji has begun meeting with stakeholders to work out a strategy to revitalise tourism after massive flooding that devastated parts of Viti Levu.

The clean-up is ongoing in the worst affected areas in the Western, Central and Northern divisions, and Fiji's Disaster Management team has now declared all resorts and hotels in the Western Division of Viti Levu non-disaster areas.

The chairman of Tourism Fiji Patrick Wong says it is a relief for an industry that's got off to a bad start this year

But he says working together on a major tourist campaign is now needed to boost tourist numbers again

"We have embarked for the next three months on a tactical campaign aimed out at Australia and New Zealand. We've formed a tourism sub-committee, which is made up of the Fiji Hotel & Tourism Association, the Society of Fiji Travel Associates, which are the ground handlers and transfer companies, airlines, our national carrier Air Pacific and Tourism Fiji, and we'll be working on reviewing our tactical campaign."
