Water problems hamper Fiji health services

2:24 pm on 20 January 2009

Problems with the water and electricity supply in some flood affected parts of Fiji have hampered the operation of some medical centres and hospitals on Viti Levu.

Disaster officials say they are working around the clock to try to restore services.

A health promotion officer for the Ministry of Health, Philip Komai says given the increased risk of disease now, they are working closely with other aid officials on recovery efforts.

"We are working hand in hand with the DISMAC (Disaster Management). We are meeting representatives, meeting regularly with the DISMAC on a daily basis and we are also receiving our messages from all the divisions and subdivisions in the country as to how they are doing. Some of them are informing us that pipe water supply was broken in some of the hospitals [and] their morturary not working."
