Calls for the dredging of rivers to prevent further flooding in Fiji

2:30 pm on 28 January 2009

The Ba Town Council is calling on Fiji's interim Government to look into the issue of dredging silted rivers following this months devastating floods.

The Fiji Times reports mayor Pravin Bala as saying the council will host a town meeting today.

Mr Bala says the recommendations will form submissions to Cabinet.

He says silt has been deposited onto river banks and beds following the flooding and will be a problem in similar weather conditions in the future.

He says there has been a lot of silt from the hills and highlands washed down into the river and if nothing is done there is fear of further possible flooding.
