The 40-year-old weekend parole programme for prisoners in Samoa has been put on hold until a review is carried out.
The decision from the The Ministry of Police and Prisons came after a call from a government MP to scrap the policy, following an incident where an elderly man was beaten by a weekend parole prisoner.
Around 180 prisoners are currently serving jail sentences at the main Tafa'igata prison.
The Acting Police Commissioner, Papalii Li'o, says a committee of several senior police officers will review the conditions inmates must follow under the week-end policy before making a decision on whether to continue with the parole or scrap the programme.
Meanwhile Papalii Li'o says the prisoner who re-offended in the latest attack on the 70 year old taxi driver has been charged with grievous bodily harm and robbery.
Papalii Li'o says the police have apologised to the elderly victim and his family.
