The forner mayor of Fiji's capital Suva Ratu Peni Volavola has expressed disappointment at the interim government's move to dissolve municipal councils in their claim to clean up corruption.
The decision means that the 12 town mayors of Fiji no longer exist, but instead town clerks have been named chief executive officers who will be assisted by yet to be appointed special administrators.
Ratu Peni Volavola, who was the Suva mayor for six consecutive terms, says the interim Government's decision to dissolve councils from Feb 1, was made without any consultation and which he says is illegal.
"I'm very disappointed because of the way that they have gone about it. They've painted a picture of corrupt practises being carried out by municipalities. OK there are instances of corrupt practises and that the Act clearly provides for the Minister to order for an investigation to be carried out for that particular municipality. Why was not this done? Why was there just this sweeping sort of directive?"
Ratu Peni Volavola says he will be seeking legal advice over the matter.
